SALADS, SALSA OR SNACKS

Get your veggie patch in gear this weekend! Who can resist the sweetness and unmatched tang of a homegrown Tomato? Plant your favorites now so you can enjoy them all summer. We have a wide selection, including beefsteak, cherry, and slicing varieties that are all shipping now. Heirloom beefsteaks are showstoppers in interesting shapes, some with color-streaked flesh. If you like cherry Tomatoes we have some that are nice and tangy, while others deliver lots of sweet red fruits. You might even find a unique striped variety that adds a touch of décor to the vegetable garden. Roma tomatoes make thick, rich Tomato paste and sauces. For impatient Tomato lovers, we have a good ol’ slicing Tomato that ripens much earlier than the rest. Tip: Pick up some Basil to plant in your Tomato bed—some say it makes the Tomatoes taste even better. Is it true? You be the judge, but at least you’ll be able to harvest your Caprese salad all at once!

It’s fun to plant a range of Peppers to use in salsa, sandwiches, and salads, but go with what you like. Are you a daring heat lover? You’ll want to try our hottest Pepper which registers somewhere between 50,000–100,000 Scoville units, much hotter than a Jalapeño but only about half as hot as a Scotch Bonnet. We have Jalapeño types, too, and mildly spicy varieties that are full of flavor with a bit of a kick. For mere mortals there’s the sweet classic red bell that’s great for stuffing, and other bells that are at their best when grilled or roasted. Cute lunchbox varieties are miniature sweet Peppers that are delicious for snacking and delightful on an appetizer platter at summer picnics. BTW, if you’re too timid for some of those tiny, extremely hot peppers don’t count them out entirely—they’re also lovely décor plants with colorful tapered fruit. Just be careful where you use them, so curious tasters and children don’t get an unwanted fiery surprise!

Plant some Basil—you’ll use it in many summer dishes. It brightens the taste of salads and pastas, and adds a nice splash of brilliant green to make your dish photo-ready! Fresh herbs are great for perking up the flavor of all your favorite recipes! Plant them in the garden or in pots outside the back door—you can even grow herbs in coffee mugs on a sunny windowsill. Growing herbs is easy, even if you’re short on space. It’s also more economical than buying a bunch from the supermarket every time you need some for a dish. Buy the herb plant once and use it all summer long! With lush green foliage in lots of different textures and delicate flowers that bloom in summer, herbs look as good as they taste and smell. We have a wide range including Classic and Garlic Chives, Italian and Greek Oregano, English and Lemon Thyme, Dill, Catnip, and Cilantro. We also have Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Chamomile.
